Economics of Migration

1. The objective of the course is the preparation of a master thesis satisfying the requirements for obtaining a MA degree in Economics. The expected result is a master thesis.

2. The topics will depend on the student's interests. The theme of the seminar are the theoretical and empirical relationships between migration and the European Economy, such as the economic determinants of migration (micro- and macro- level), the economic consequences of migration for the sending and receiving countries, etc.

3. The first meeting will be devoted to a discussion of MA degree requirements. During the following meetings, the participants will present their outlines, work progress and results.

4. The seminar is intended for 2nd year students of english programmes.

5. In order to receive credit for the first semester, students must prepare a thesis outline. The submission of a master thesis is equivalent to obtaining credit for the second semester.

The envisaged thematic scope of theses prepared during the seminar is both macro- and micro-level. Macro (and local) level subjects are expected to revolve around the theoretical and empirical relationships between immigration and the economies (in particular, labor markets) of receiving European Union countries, as well as emigration and the economies (in particular, labor markets) of sending EU members states. The micro level approach is expected to concentrate on the economic determinants of migration and economic consequences of migration (individual and household).

The proposed thesis methodology will contain a literature review, accompanied by an empirical (statistical, econometric) analysis of data.

The basic learning outcome is the ability to prepare a Master thesis satisfying the necessary scientific and formal requirements. Additinal outcomes include expertise in the existing theoretical literature on the links between migration processes and economics.
