seminaria magisterskie

Skrócony opis:

The goal of the seminar: The goal of the seminar is to prepare and write a good master's thesis. This requires a clear formulation of the theses, a review of the literature on the subject and the implementation of own empirical research.

2. Content: participants will read theoretical and empirical papers related to the proposed topics of work. The lecturer helps you to choose the texts and then evaluates their usefulness for the planned topic of the work

3. method of the subject's accomplishment: During the seminar, the participants prepare entries on which they present theoretical and empirical articles related to the proposed topics of the thesis. During second semester, the elements of the thesis already written are discussed.

4. conditions of participation: all 2-nd students of the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the University of Warsaw.

5. pass: pass on the basis of the progress of work in the preparation of the master's thesis.

Pełny opis:

As part of the seminar, on the third semester (short presentations combined with the discussion), selected classic and the latest articles on the analysis of changes in international trade flows, services, foreign direct investment and the effects of various trade policy instruments are discussed.

These are articles published in renowned international journals. This should enable mastering professional English and understanding which elements of commercial theory and policy are controversial and / or can be the subject of empirical research. Students will also get acquainted with selected databases and magazines (JSTOR and others). At the end of the year, the topic and structure of the master's thesis should be specified. In turn, the fourth semester are devoted to a thorough analysis of issues selected by seminarians and the presentation of fragments of MA theses.

Master's thesis usually covers topics related to trade in goods and services, foreign direct investment, trade policy implications and the effects of economic integration. This is, for example, an empirical analysis of the effects of selected trade policy instruments, often in the context of Poland's participation in the European Union. Some works present the principles of instruments (eg anti-dumping) and the effects of their application to international trade flows. Other works also address issues related to the verification of some elements of the theory of international trade.

In their works, students usually present simple or slightly more complex models explaining commercial or integration effects. Standard econometric analyzes of trade in goods and services are most frequently used. In some theses, partial-equation simulation models are used.

The empirical analysis is usually on trade data contained in the World Bank and WTO database (WITS) macro and microeconomic data contained in WDI (World Development Indicators) and, for example, data on gravity models (on the CEPIII database).

Sample topics of works from the last few years are as follows:

• Analysis of the impact of the abolition of import tariffs on cocoa paste from the perspective of developing exporting countries

• Analysis of Brexit’s implications for agricultural trade between UK and EU.

• The Coal Market - Export Strategy For Poland

• Global Crisis of 2008-2009 and international trade – the analysis based on gravity model

• Determinants of second-hand motor vehicles prices. The analysis based on model of hedonic prices.

• Determinants of horizontal and vertical intra-industry trade (in the exchange between the "old" and four new EU members)

• Competition on the aeronautics market - competition between Airbus and Boeing in the light of strategic trade policy

• The "Flying Geese" model. Is it applicable in Europe?

• The use of art. XII GATT in restoring the balance of payments balance with particular emphasis on Poland;

• Subsidies: elements of regulation theory and practice on the example of the sugar market in Poland;

• EU anti-dumping policy in the light of theory and empirical research

• Economic integration and cultural diversity - an example of cinematographic films. Economic analysis of the problem.

• Effects of the liberalization of trade in telecommunications services in the European Union

• Impact of foreign direct investment on international trade - substitution or complementarity?

• National determinants of FDI inflow to the countries of Central and Eastern Europe

• Impact of the Internet on international trade

Literatura:

During the seminar, the literature is adapted to the relatively narrow specializations of the written master's theses. The literature is based on specialized articles published in renowned English-language journals.

As a reminder for students who did not pass International Economics (or International Trade Policy), it is recommended to:

• P. R. Krugman, M. Obstfeld, M. Melitz, International Economic. Theory and Practice,

• C. Marrewijk, International Trade & the World Economy, Oxford University Press, 2002

Compulsory literature:

• R. C. Feenstra, Advanced International Trade, Theory and Evidence, Princeton Univ. Press 2004.

• L. Rivera-Batiz, M-A. Oliva, International Trade. Theory, Strategies and Evidence. Oxford Univ. Press, 2003.

• J. Francois, K. Reinert, Applied Methods for Trade Policy Analysis, A Handbook, H. Bowen, A. Hollander, J.M. Viaene, Applied International Trade Analysis, Macmillan Press, 1998.

Efekty uczenia się:

Students follwing the seminar should be able:

1. analyze selected advanced texts from recognized English-language journals in the field of international economics;

2. present the read texts in a synthetic and legible manner for other participants of the seminar

3. gain in-depth knowledge at Master's level from selected fragments of trade theory, trade policy, service exchange, foreign direct investment and economic integration;

4. conduct econometric analysis and simulations using partial-equilibrium models

5. formulate research hypotheses and test them empirically

6. work out the structure of work and research

7. formulate partial and synthetic conclusions from the conducted study.

Metody i kryteria oceniania:

Credit based on the progress of work in preparing the master's thesis.

During the third semester, the grade is based of the quality of the presentations prepared by the seminarians, during which the participants prepare entries, on which they present theoretical and empirical articles related to the proposed topics of the thesis. Passing the third semester requires presenting the initial concept of work and indicating the main methodological and empirical problems that need to be solved.

In the fourth semester of master's studies, already written excerpts from the master's thesis are discussed and analyzed. Both the progress in the empirical study and the development of theoretical or institutional fragments of the thesis are evaluated. The progress in these works and the quality of the fragments presented are the basis for the assessment of the pass, and the whole thesis is the basis for the final evaluation of the supervisor.
