A C1 English course for University of Warsaw students from different faculties with an emphasis on creative writing and literary criticism. This course will draw upon the classics of literature written in English ( by Robert Frost, William Wordsworth, Sylvia Plath, Iris Murdoch, Muriel Spark, Sam Selvon and many more ), as a way of teaching English at an advanced level. The goal is to open up deeper discussions on a wide range of subjects. Not only will students learn to use advanced vocabulary in a way that is inspired by the greatest writers in the English language, they will also be able to express themselves by writing and presenting their own original:

 poetry

 dialogue scenes

 characterization

 short stories

In addition, there will be more practical help in the form of learning phrases and vocabulary for job interviews, how to write emails, as well as how to express oneself with precision and politeness in social situations. Students will learn to communicate complex ideas, personal opinions, descriptions and critiques.

Teaching methods:

Communicative discussions (pairs, whole class) on a range of topics

Literary criticism on poetry, extracts of novels, plays, short stories

Role-play

Working in pairs/groups on creative projects

Performing or reading their own creative writing

Listening (podcasts, audiobooks)

Viewing (theatre performances, film fragments)

Regular individual feedback on writing and speaking

Students are not required to buy a textbook.

Assessment will adhere to the university's scoring system and final scores will be decided through performance throughout the semester (active participation in classes and timely completion of all required tasks or assignments) and assessments addressing skills, topics and functions practiced during the semester.
