The course presents an outline of economic history of Western Europe from the late middle ages till the present. The material is presented in a more detailed way in relation to the more recent history. The course focus especially on the economic changes from the early capitalism till the time of today's global economy. The students will discuss the origins and evolution of the modern economy and analyze historical constraints of different economic institutions. The aim of the course is also to develop abilities of critical reading, academic writing and the communication skills of the students. For credit and grade, the students are expected to pass written exam, to participate actively in classes, to prepare oral presentation and a paper of 10-15 pages (18 - 27tsd. chars.). |

Understanding the economic point of view is crucial in teaching economics. Reading the works of such authors as A. Smith, J. M. Keynes, and M. Friedman gives a unique opportunity of understanding the way economists conceptualize the economy. The course will be based on lectures combined with in-class discussions. Students will learn the concepts and theories of prominent economists, as well as ways of analyzing and interpreting texts, writing papers and preparing scientific presentations. The pass mark for the seminar is the activity in class (including Power Point presentation), writing an essay and passing the final exam. |

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with economic determinants of population processes and to prepare them for writing papers of academic character in which students make use of basic methods of demographic analysis. This course develops in students the ability to identify and solve research problems. An important element of the course is the analysis of interactions between demographic and economic phenomena on the global, regional, and local level, as well as developing the ability to make use of statistical data sources and scientific literature. The learning outcomes comprise the abilities to properly write academic papers, to search, analyze, interpret, and present demographic data, and of the knowledge of basic population theories, phenomena, and processes. In order to pass the course, students are required to actively participate in the classes, to prepare a paper, and to pass final written exam. |
