The purpose of the course is to acquaint students with regulatory framework and accountancy rules, financial accounting systems, which is a logical, complete and compact system, describing assets , sources of their financing, business activities, company chart of accounts, valuation methods, the analysis and interpretation of particular components of assets, liabilities, incomes and costs, methods of keeping a record of fixed assets, intangible assets, materials, wares, final products, cash, money on bank account, settlements of accounts with state budget, suppliers and buyers, workers - payroll and business trips, incomes and costs, basis and reserve capitals. Lectures deal with conception, form and content of accounting reports - balance sheet, profit and loss statement and cash flow statement. The course is assigned for students on the third year on the first level. Assessment based in 30% on work in groups and in 70% on written exam contained test and tasks.]

Master's level course.

The aim of this course is to present modern macroeconomic methods and models used both by researchers and analysts to understand and predict macroeconomic phenomena. Upon completion students will be able to use acquired tools to explain and interpret the workings of the macroeconomy at an advanced level.

The course is composed of three parts. The first part is devoted to the microfoundations of modern macroeconomic models. The second part covers core growth facts and theories. The third part is devoted to analyzing and modeling business cycles phenomena and labor market issues.

Evaluation is based on closed book mid-term exam and final exam. Students can earn additional points by completing homework assignments.

The course introduces students to important topics in advanced microeconomics. The course has two concurrent parts: Game Theory and General Equilibrium. The former discussess game theory and its applications, while the latter introduces production and consumption theory concepts in order to provide a coherent picture for the general equilibrium framework.

Completing the course requires passing the mid-term and final exam, respective to both parts of the course (4 exams in total).

The aim of the course is to teach advanced programming methods in R, create complex scripts / programs, and evaluate their time complexity, as well as create own functions and packages. Firstly, the functions of the dplyr package will be presented to effectively aggregate and analyze data in subgroups, and use pipe operator %>% for a more readable code representation of several nested commands. Then the main focus will be on the automation of repetitive activities. In this context, while and for loops will be discussed, as well as the alternative R functions of the apply family. Also, elements will be introduced to conditionally execute program fragments and run code in batch mode. We will also discuss creating own functions and packages. An important part of the course will be showing tools for analyzing the code, evaluating its time effectiveness, and identifying and handling errors. The use of C ++ basics in R (Rcpp package) will also be discussed for example to replace slow R loops

The course aims to familiarize participants with the creation, modification and management of databases using SQL language, which is the standard used in databases such as Oracle, Sybase, Informix, Microsoft SQL Server, Access, etc. Students will become acquainted with the theoretical and the practical issues of database creation, maintenance and management. Special attention will be paid to the SQL queries in databases such as MS SQL Server.

The course gives both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to model a credit scorecard. During the course all necessary steps to develop a scorecard would be discussed and presented. Starting from data preparation (handling a missing data and outliers, derived variables preparation, data sampling), going through model estimation (i.e. logistic regression) and model quality assessment (discriminatory power, stability) and ending on optimal cut-off choice.

The purpose of the course is acquainting students with general pinciples of the financial reporting system, undescoring the critical role of analysis of financial reports in investment decision making, including the principal financial statements (the income statement, balance sheet, cash flow statement and statement of changes in owners' equity) which allows a financial analyst to evaluate trends in performance of different companies over the same period. In addition, specific categories of assets and liabilities that are particularly susceptible to the impact of alternative accounting policies and estimates will be discussed.

The course is assigned to students on the first year of the second level (master studies). Assessment will be based on 30% discussions and 70% on written examination containing both test and problem sets.

The course is devoted to explaining the patterns of international location of economic activity. Topics discussed include the formation of industrial and service clusters, regional versus national specialization in production, the role of metropolitan areas as the engines of innovation, economic growth and regional development, declining and emerging regions, economic activity of population, regional unemployment and regional wage determination, international labour and human capital mobility, the role of foreign direct investment in shaping the world patterns of specialization. The seminar is designed mainly for Master of Arts in International Economics Program, however, exchange students visiting the Department of Economics at Warsaw University are also welcome to participate. Polish students with good working knowledge of English from other specialization fields can enroll subject to instructor's approval. The assesment is based on the presentation and the final paper.

The course objective is to present a comprehensive treatment of international dimensions of monetary policy. Part one reviews major issues of monetary policy in an open economy from a single-country perspective. Part two covers basic models in international monetary economics (from Mundell-Fleming tradition to the New Open Economy Macroeconomics). Part three is devoted to international monetary policy cooperation and coordination, presented both within macroeconomic and institutional framework.

The course is the graduate lecture in international trade policy. Its focus will be on new trends in the theory of trade policy. The course is offered in English in the winter term. The objective of the course is to acquaint participants with international trade policy issues. The topics covered will include analysis of instruments of trade policy under perfect and imperfect competition, and the political economy of trade policy. Another objective of the course is to help students explore potential thesis topics in these areas. This course constitutes the first part of the undergraduate sequence in international economics (followed by the Open Economy Macroeconomics given in the spring semester). The main objective of the course is to provide students a non-technical introduction into the theory and policy of international trade and investment. The course consists of two parts. The first part explains reasons and gains from trade using classical and neoclassical trade theories based on absolute and comparative advantage as well as more recent theories based on increasing returns, product differentiation and demand similarity. The second part investigates effectiveness of various trade policy instruments under perfect and imperfect competition, explains the political economy of trade policy and the role of preferential trading arrangements and international trade organizations in shaping the contemporary patterns of international trade and investment.

The aim of this course is to acquaint students with the fundamental theories in Quantitative Finance. The theories set out to analyze the complexity of options and their underlying price processes. Given that future prices are a set of many possibilities, and the ultimate outcome is random, we will learn mathematical tools to help distinguish the many probable economic states, which provides a price mechanism. Classes are devoted to the presentation of the basic concepts of linear algebra. These are, among others: systems of linear equations and methods of solving them, linear spaces, base and dimension, linear transformations, the determinant of a matrix, eigenvalues ​​and eigenvectors, diagonalisation of a matrix, the scalar product and quadratic forms. In addition to mastering the techniques of linear algebra aim of the course is to develop student's ability to accurately and logical reason and prepare them for the applications of linear algebra in economics.

Kurs przedstawia bardziej zaawansowane metody uczenia maszynowego: drzewa decyzyjne oraz sieci neuronowe. Praktyczne przykłady obejmują metody oceny mocy predykcyjnej modelu na próbach treningowej, walidacyjnej oraz testowej, metod wyboru predyktorów oraz uczenia łączonego (ensembling). Omawiane są zarówno przykłady praktyczne jak i wprowadzenie teoretyczne. Praktyczne aplikacje modeli stosowane są w problemach regresji oraz klasyfikacji, metody klasyfikacji i rozpoznawania obrazów, przetwarzania i prognozowania sekwencji i szeregów czasowych, a także wdrożenia tych metod w środowisku chmurowym.

The course aims at presentation of the basic concepts, categories and simple models of modern macroeconomic analysis. Mastering the material should allow the students to understand the functioning of the economy as a whole, studying the structure of modern macroeconomic theory and give a solid basis for studying macroeconomics at the intermediate and advanced level. Hence, emphasis will be given to mastering of the basic macroeconomic independencies and on differences between short-term and long-term approach to macroeconomics.

Credit for classes is based on the written final exam, consisting of computational tasks, open questions and graphical tasks. It is also necessary to get a credit for discussion classes first. Credit for the whole course will be given to students that will gather min. 60% of the weighted average number of pints from tutorial (weight 30%) and final exam (70%). It is required to get at least 50% of point from the final exam.

Course in Open Economy Macroeconomics covers issues related to the macroeconomics an economy linked with the rest of the world with different kinds of economic ties.

The course consists of a lecture, where the basic concepts and theories are presented with some empirical illustration. The discussion classes complement the lecture and allow the students to consolidate knowledge acquired during the lecture, to refer it to the empirical examples and to train some analytical skills related presented material. It is expected that students have adequate knowledge of macroeconomics II and basic microeconomics. The lecture ends with a written examination in the form of open questions. In order to pass the exam it is necessary to obtain 50% of points. Final evaluation of the course is given on the basis of the weighted average number of points obtained from the final exam and discussion classes with weights 70% and 30%, respectively.

Students will learn the latest volatility and returns forecasting models and advanced investment derivatives based strategies which incorporate unconventional distributions of returns in the process of managing of financial assets. Additionally, they will learn how to calibrate models and test them on empirical data (financial time series), with daily and intra-daily frequency. Moreover, the topics of identifying, quantifying, modeling and managing risk according to the latest investigation in financial literature will be discussed. The assessment will be based on timely preparation of highly marked master thesis dissertation.

The course objective is to give a comprehensive presentation of main topics in monetary economics: monetary theory, its empirical formulations and their econometric tests. Part one consists of the introduction to monetary economics and of the presentation of three approaches to incorporate money into general equilibrium models. Part two covers the impact of monetary policy on the economy at the macro-level in the short run. Part three focuses on the demand for money with special attention paid to its empirical aspects. Finally, part four deals with supply of money and the central banking.

Celem przedmiotu jest przekazanie wiedzy i ćwiczenie praktycznych umiejętności związanych ze sprawną komunikacją, rozwiązywaniem konfliktów i negocjacji. Negocjacje zostaną przedstawione jako skuteczna metoda rozwiązywania konfliktów i podejmowania decyzji grupowych, wymagająca wysokiego poziomu umiejętności komunikacyjnych. Studenci będą uczyć się i ćwiczyć budowanie strategii negocjacyjnych oraz stosowanie technik prowadzenia negocjacji, w tym społeczno-ekonomicznego i kulturowego kontekstu negocjacji.

W celu uzyskania efektu rozwoju kompetencji studentów związanych ze sprawnym udziałem w negocjacjach, w trakcie zajęć odbędą się warsztaty polegające na prowadzeniu gier negocjacyjnych. Ocena tych gier zespołowych oraz ocena eseju napisanego przez studentów indywidualnie będą podstawą do uzyskania zaliczenia przedmiotu.

The aim of this course is to explain socio-political mechanisms determining economic processes and to analyze the social consequences of these processes. Classes are also aimed at preparing students to analyze economic phenomena in a more comprehensive and interdisciplinary way than is the case in the standard approach of micro- and macroeconomics. Attention will be devoted to the acquisition of new methodological skills and students’ active participation in the course. The course is conducted in the form of lectures and classes, closely related to each other. They are intended for second-year students who have completed basic courses in microeconomics and macroeconomics. Classes must be passed in order to be admitted to the exam, which has a written form. The final grade is composed of the results of the exam and classes.

The course consists of two parts: introduction to SQL (Part1) and introduction to Python (Part2).

The first part of the course provides participants with a broad introduction to SQL in the following topics :data administration (to create tables, indexes) data manipulation (to add, modify, delete and retrieve data),query construction to extract useful information.

In the second part , the material covers the use of

data structures, data manipulation and visualization in Python. The course ends with presentation of methods for joining SQL queries and Python program.

The aim of this lecture is to give theoretical background for high frequency data analysis, which is used to prepare, test and implement quantitative trading strategies. Students will acquire knowledge about characteristics of high frequency data and tools used to evaluate trading strategies. Successful strategies for different intra-day investment horizon will be discussed. The role of practical sections is to build and verify own trading strategies on high-frequency data. Students will learn to prepare the data, aggregate it to desired frequency, backtest the strategy and verify the strategies from different perspectives (returns, risk, etc.). Topics discussed during the lecture will be illustrated with practical examples and exercises. R environment will be used - its previous knowledge is not required.

The main goal of the course is to present the basic concepts of reproducibility and repeatability in research, their significance in scientific and commercial research and development processes, and to impart to students basic practical knowledge about several of the most popular modern tools for reproducibility in the industry. Upon completion of the course, students will understand the general concept of research reproducibility and comprehend which tool can be used in a given context. They will also acquire skills in using computer tools that enable achieving reproducibility and repeatability of research, and they will be able to apply the skills acquired during the course in participating in modern scientific and commercial data science projects.

The purpose of the seminar is the presentation of the modern financial risk evaluation. On this part of the course we consider: liquidity risk and interest rate risks. Especially we concentrate on: gap analysis, costs of liquidity, prediction of liquidity requirement; interest rate gap, duration, convexity, improvements of duration’s calculation, goals of management based on the duration analysis, simulations of interest rates behavior. The seminar takes place in computer lab. The final exam consists of “true/false” questions with explanation.

Celem seminarium jest analiza koncepcji inteligentnych miast (ang. smart cities) w odniesieniu do aktywnego starzenia się (ang. active ageing). Zastosowanie technologii w projektowaniu inteligentnych miast może przyczynić się do usprawnienia opieki, stworzenia odpowiedniej infrastruktury, podaży dóbr i usług, na które popyt generują seniorzy. Powstawanie nowych rynków i produktów to wyzwania, przed którymi stoją miasta i jednocześnie problemy, którymi będziemy się zajmować w czasie seminarium. Ze względu na wieloaspektowość problemu w ramach seminarium będziemy prowadzić badania interdyscyplinarne, łączące ekonomię, socjologię, politologię, geografię społeczną czy gerontologię. Seminarium będzie prowadzone we współpracy z partnerami zagranicznymi, zwłaszcza z Uniwersytetem w Heidelbergu. W związku z tym będziemy zachęcać studentów do pisania prac w języku angielskim. Zaliczenie będzie zależało od postępów w przygotowaniu pracy magisterskiej

The main course objective is a presentation of most common social research methods, both of qualitative and quantitative nature. The most important expected result of instruction is getting basic skills of planning and conducting own empirical research as well as getting knowledge useful for critical assessment of other authors' researches. Those skills can be useful not only while conducting own scientific research (e.g. as a part of master thesis) but also in business practice, both in private and public sector (market research, tools for strategic management in organization, preparation and evaluation of public policies). The course covers a review of different research approaches and their applications, issues connected with preparing questionnaires, survey data analysis and a discussion of the possibility to combine quantitative and qualitative methods. The course is conducted as e-learning.

1. The main objective of this course is to clarify and to specify the idea of sustainability and then to define how to measure sustainable development. 2. The course starts from ecological foundation and then goes through renewable and non-renewable resources management, economic valuation, and the policy guidelines for sustainable development. The core element of the course is comprehensive presentation of diverse sustainability indicators: aggregated, cross-cutting, and for local communities. In particular, aggregated, macroeconomic and single-number indicators are discussed to monitor progress of sustainable development. Additionally, country specific and EU sets of structural indicators and indicators for local communities are also presented and discussed. 3. An interactive lecture with additional students' presentations. 4. This course is for students of Development Economics and visiting Erasmus students. 5. Evaluation is based on participation and oral presentations.

Głównym celem wykładu jest pogłębienie znajomości teorii wyceny opcji Blacka-Scholesa-Mertona w jej wymiarze formalno-matematycznym, intuicyjnym i czysto praktycznym. W czasie wykładu studenci poznają dokładnie założenia modelu oraz jego teoretyczne i praktyczne ograniczenia (koszty transakcyjne, nieciągłości procesu cen, dyskretne dostosowanie pozycji zabezpieczającej) oraz zastanowią się, jakie obciążenie niesie złamanie poszczególnych założeń. Studencie dowiedzą się także, jak rynek wycenia opcje i jakie wymagania stawia modelom wyceny. W tym świetle przedyskutowane zostaną możliwe udoskonalenia teorii BSM, pozwalające lepiej oddać rzeczywiste kwotowania cen opcji na rynku. Ilustracją rozważań teoretycznych będą przykłady praktyczne i kody w C++/VBA.

The course aims providing a comprehensive review of topic modelling i.e. a set of machine learning methods for grouping texts. Firstly, it involves discussing introductory steps that need to be performed before the modelling phase i.e. collecting textual data and processing it. Next, basic topic modelling algorithms are planned to be discussed. In particular, most popular algorithm – Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) will be presented. Also, more specific and advanced topic modelling algorithms are planned to be introduced. Furthermore, most common problems with performing a topic modelling analysis shall be discussed. At the end of the course, case studies will be discussed.

Zajęcia Web Scraping są dedykowane pobieraniu danych z sieci w zautomatyzowany sposób. Dzięki kursowi, studenci zdobędą wiedzę i umiejętności do wydobywania danych z Internetu. Podczas zajęć przedstawione zostaną kluczowe techniki web scrapingu. W szczególności, uczestnicy kursu będą potrafili dobrać adekwatne narzędzia i przygotować program scrapujący stosownie do potrzeb. W ramach zajęć omówione zostaną przede wszystkim aspekty praktyczne web scrapingu. Przedmiot jest realizowany w języku programowania Python w formie laboratorium.
